What might it mean for a bath to be a fountain, and for this myth to be re-appropriated to address a woman’s relationship with herself rather than her lover? Or rather: You see the bottom of their legs, shoes or feet and their panties. The work was initiated by the artist's desire to focus on femininity and how women are in the world.
The inspiration for this series of paintings arose after an experience Beth Mohr had one evening on her way home by bicycle, passing a man standing and urinating by a tree. Definitely different – something different anyway, and why?
Why do we think differently about women in the public space? Eg. also about a drunken woman versus a drunken man... According to all of us, what norms must the woman consciously or unconsciously live up to? Lucy is the culmination of the two. As a COVID “jazz studies grad,” Lucy stepped out of college life and into the absolute stillness of the pandemic. Her works usually begin as simple, quick expressions, often inspired by music, and the result of the piece doesn’t become clear until she is already immersed in it. Most of Lucy’s works are widely kinetic, playful and reflective of her innate need to express herself. When Lucy isn’t on stage, she is painting and gaining technical insight from her mother and grandmother. She allows herself the freedom to paint uninhibited, flirting with figurative as well as abstract expressionism. Her exuberant brushstrokes and vibrant colors reign in her portraits, in her worlds always inhabited by human beings. Women mainly. Conscientiously, and with a great sense for beauty, she portrays models to appeal the beholder, at first sight. Yet, this is not the main motive of her art. Unconscientiously, she moves away from the exact copy of reality to express emotional intimacy, spiritual, or metaphysical states of mind.
