stefanie-molter-correspondances-3
Stéfanie Molter — Correspondances #3

A PLAY OF LIGHT, TRANSPARENCY AND COLOR

Light and transparency, depth of color, fluidity of line: watercolor is a medium that is both delicate and alive. Never entirely fixed, its pigments evolve in contact with water and air – drifting, gathering, blending, dissolving – sometimes under the influence of chance.

This free, ethereal, and sensitive nature resonates deeply with my artistic approach. Situated at the boundary between figuration and abstraction, my works seek to translate the invisible – emotion, dreams, and imagination – inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in a dreamlike universe where poetry and fragments of life intertwine.

BLUE, OR THE LAST COLOR TO RESIST THE NIGHT

Associated with both the depths of the oceans and the vastness of the sky, blue evokes the realms of dreams and spirituality. A symbol of escape, melancholy, and serenity, it is also the last color to resist the night: the final threshold before daylight fades and the stars emerge.

For this reason, blue – whether in the form of ink or fresh watercolor washes – naturally occupies a central place in my creations. I am particularly drawn to rich ultramarine shades, whose cool hue and matte texture contrast beautifully with the warmth and luminous brilliance of gold.

Gold itself – a reflection of the stars and the celestial world – appears throughout my work in the form of watercolor pigments, liquid gilding, or gold leaf. At times it serves to create focal points and guide the viewer’s gaze; at others, it highlights imperfections and transforms them into something precious.

White, despite its apparent simplicity, also plays an essential role. Like a pause in a musical score, it creates space for breath and contemplation. It reflects light, transcends matter, and yet contains within it the sum of all colors.

MAKING THE INVISIBLE VISIBLE, GIVING IT FORM ON PAPER

I conceive my creations as a living, expressive substance emerging from my imagination and the deepest parts of my inner self, of which painting captures – much like a photograph – a fleeting moment. Reflections of an inner movement, my works reveal what I see, experience, and feel in response to the upheavals of a complex, restless, and ever-changing world, as well as those precious moments when the mind escapes in search of a timeless refuge.

Through a subtle interplay of textures and transparencies, my watercolors bring shadow and light, clarity and darkness into dialogue, seeking to reveal what usually remains hidden. They are a condensation of the emotions and thoughts that inhabit and move me, gradually taking shape upon the paper.

For this open call, I wished to bring my watercolors into conversation with the artistic worlds of three French poets – Éléonore Dupraz, Chloé Baudry and Benoît Sitzia – whose words accompany my creations through a series of postcards. This meeting of artistic universes echoes the idea of epistolary correspondence – between stories, memories, and silences – creating a sensitive dialogue between poetry and pigment.
