Philippe Calia is an artist, photographer and filmmaker, based out of Bombay (India) and member of the Studio Hans Lucas. Located somewhere between the documentary and the experimental, his personal work mostly revolves around notions of time, memory and history, with a focus on vernacular and unruly expressions. It has been exhibited internationally in various museums or art venues and is held in private collections in India.
Over the past ten years, Calia has been commissioned by agencies, film studios, corporates, cultural institutions and international media organisations. His reportage work has been featured in various publications, amongst which The New Yorker, Der Spiegel, Le Monde or The Financial Times.
Calia's engagement with the visual arts also takes shape through writing, education and curation. Since 2013, he has been collaborating with PIX as a photo editor and researcher. In 2015 he co-founded BIND, a platform for photography in India, built around a photobook library.
