Most recently Chehayeb’s work was featured in the Spring Issue of ArtMaze Magazine out of London. Her most recent oil paintings and drawings are a collaged accumulation of personal writingsand nostalgia employing the gestural abstraction of figures, sounds and text to document boththe present and the past simultaneously. Chehayeb incorporates all elements of studio practicespecifically the interruption of the process. “Beginning again” several times throughout thepiece is an inevitable way to work.
The work utilizes these interruptions with each piece whileincorporating new and continuing initial marks and images. This documentation is inspired by Chehayebs ancestral lineage of immigrants. Being fourthgeneration Mexican-American, there are no longer family members who recall the trauma andstruggles of immigrant life nor the joys or stories. “Every day is marked by the freedom I havebecause of their sacrifices and every day I wonder what part of me is directly because of them”Though it is an upsetting reality at times to have so many holes in the history, the work ismotivated by the urge to gather furthest memories in combination with current significantmoments and surroundings. Chehayebs paintings are a personal collection stories, poems, sounds and secrets.
