Description

I made a very large series of ceramic "Venus" fertility statues (Venus or Aphrodite being the mother of Eros...) In ancient times, fertility statues were seen as holy objects that glorified sexuality, fertility, and Mother Nature. In this series, I put a tongue-in-cheek spin on these sexually charged objects, since the form I’m using was derived from a lowly dog toy.

Due to the pandemic, I no longer had access to my kiln so I started painting my fertility statues with watercolor and inks on paper. They are a celebration of the divine feminine and highlight the joyful curves of the female body.

This is my representation of Freud's concept of "the id"–a baby who shouts "look at me!" He's a giant golden phallus with a tiny erect penis and I created him to get a chuckle out of the viewer. As a woman of Indian descent I've also seen my share of kama sutra illustrations… In Indian tantric traditions the penis is depicted as a lingum statue-this is my playful interpretation of that iconic form.

This piece “flutter” symbolizes a woman’s sexual awakening using the moth as a common symbol of transformation.“Ascending Vine” is an imaginary elemental plant spirit. The sinuous form is reminiscent of the snake of temptation in the garden of Eden. The plant deity is a tiny surprise within the fleshy mouth of the plant.
