Context
The postcard was exhibited in 2015 in Poperinge, Belgium, as part of the exhibition The Smell of War. One hundred years earlier, the postcard had been sent by a Bavarian soldier from the front during the First World War. The building depicted on the postcard also became the exhibition venue in 2015.
The postcard carried the smell of gas — an olfactory time travel intended to awaken memory for contemporary "viewers" - don´t forget the past! Relevant contextual information: the first German gas attack took place in the Flanders Fields, where the exhibition was held.
