Context

With painting and drawing as his primary practices, Åhlman uses the Scandinavian landscape that surrounds him as a source for exploration, investigated by returning time and time again in different seasons, weathers or time of day, always with a camera at hand to gather photographical notes of memory to bring back to the studio. With a conviction that exploration is about longing, without knowing what for, the act of returning turns into moments of repetition on the chosen surface on which to paint, each individual piece adding a new brick to a painterly landscape in a constant state of expansion. The full moon and the horizon are two recurring parts in this narrative, both as fundamental ingredients in a landscape, and as two parallel calculations of time, linear and circular at the same time and space. Åhlman always works on several paintings simultaneously which are in constant conversation and debate with one another across the studio and over time and as abstraction breaks reality, careful planning meets coincidental addition, creating problems left for tomorrow to solve with the result in a gegraphically unregognisable place in time and colour.

Samuel Åhlman is an artist striving for a process without any possible conclusion or definitive finishing point. -I like to have a lot to look at, a lot to look for, and a lot to find out, he says.
