Context
My work revolves around the idea of “waiting.” Before we all had smartphones to keep us occupied at all times, moments of contemplation and waiting were an important part of life. Before text messages existed, we waited for a letter to arrive or for a postcard from friends on vacation. These postcards bore traces of their journey or smudged ink. Sometimes even the sender’s name was missing, and there are some mysteries about their authors that I’ve never solved. The scenes I’ve drawn are inspired by works by the Finnish-Swedish artist Elin Danielsson Gambogi (1861–1919), whom few people know today. Through my drawings, I pay tribute to this wonderful artist and to a time when we communicated in a very different way.
