Context

My longest-running WHEREVER I GO series captures moments away from any main event, often focusing on the ground at my feet as I move through space with dance-like movement. This physicality—embodying experience—creates a visceral connection and deeply imprints memory. In Gyno Visit No-Self Portraits, my lens ventures into that private, vulnerable, often emotionally charged space. In these and other works, the body is absent, evoked only through garments and accessories set aside—traces of presence that becomes a timeline of the self, reflecting on how our items speak about who we are and what defines a portrait. THE LADIES ROOM series For decades, wherever I traveled, I noticed how designers, architects, and proprietors used otherwise functional spaces as opportunities for wit, elegance, humor, and atmosphere. What might be treated as merely practical — a sign, a threshold, a mirror, a roll of toilet paper — can become expressive, revealing the character of a place and the social codes that shape it. Only recently has this universal space become overtly political. Neutral designations have always existed, but decisions about how to name, divide, merge, or reimagine public restrooms now feel newly deliberate and consequential. These images reflect on what is gained and what is lost in that transition, and how even the most ordinary doors we pass through register broader cultural shifts. Postcard 1 From WHEREVER I GO series, at the Untitled art fair, intervening with Maurizio Cattelan's Toilet Paper brand rug.

Postcard 2 From THE LADIES ROOM series This image was made during a trip with my mother to Italy, at the beautiful Villa d’Este on Lake Como, where we had a special lunch for my birthday. Circa 2000, before cell phone selfies were ubiquitous, it became the catalyst for my subsequent focus on public restrooms. At the time, working as a graphic/branding designer, I was interested in how, if at all, proprietors approached these necessary spaces as opportunities to create something beyond the ordinary, and particular to its setting. The original photograph, as I recall, wasn’t especially interesting or vivid, so I worked in Photoshop to enhance it. That gesture nods to my broader practice: shaped both by my career in design and by my mother’s attention to detail in her own presentation, I am always looking to maximize the beauty wherever I go.

Postcard 3 From THE LADIES ROOM series "Sweeping Sketch" Sketch London is renowned for its iconic ladies' room, with its futuristic pink egg-shaped pods. By chance, I arrived just as an attendant in a French maid costume swept between them, capturing the space at its most theatrical.
