Was this experience helpful?
My work grows out of my own experiences of loss that have taught me that belonging is a living process — a recurring cycle of coming apart and being put back together, in new configurations, over and over. My background as a grief support therapist also shapes my creative process: noticing and listening for what matters, embracing uncertainty, trusting intuition, and working in layers that honour histories and create meaning from what loss leaves behind.
That cycle — coming apart, and being put back together in new ways — is enacted materially in how each artwork is made. The papers I paint and collage into the work once served other roles — as protective packaging, table coverings, colour tests, and brush-cleaning sheets — and carry unplanned "beautiful messes" from earlier creative moments. I tear, layer, and reassemble them, along with other painted papers I create, to build each piece. Working this way insists that beauty can be made from what has been torn apart, and that renewal — personal, social, and ecological — is always possible.
