Frankie Bakker — Correspondances #1

My work investigates the body as a relational archive of emotional and neurological experience within a contemporary, technology-saturated world. I consider how identity, intimacy, and protection are formed through embodied experience, and how the nervous system responds to pressure, care, overload, and connection with people and the land.

Textiles, particularly knitted forms, function as externalised nervous systems within my practice, carrying ideas of memory, regulation, tension, and storytelling. The repetitive act of knitting operates as a ritual of grounding and attention, where rhythm creates space for reflection and sensory recalibration. My work draws on the historical lineage of textile practices as coded communication and embodied knowledge.

Recurring bird-headed figures appear in my work as hybrid forms of protection, transformation, and emotional ambiguity. These figures soften the boundaries of the human form, offering alternative ways of considering identity, vulnerability, and freedom.

I am currently developing a body of work that explores how we protect ourselves while still giving and receiving energy. I am interested in beauty as something located in the body and psyche, rather than something shaped by external influence
