Just as I step into the day open to the next encounter, listening to the conversations left and right, so my eye seeks the gestures, the postures, the fleeting emotions that speak beyond the words. This passes from thought to hand, marking the surface with pen or crayon, chalk or brush. It is a record of the moment, a holding fast to the everyday, a mining of the ordinary for meaning and connection.

Working against hierarchies of genre or scale, these works remain intimate in the connection to the ordinary. A palette of only primary colors, a reduction to black and white, a flattening to the assertion of the surface – these choices echo a belief in simple connections, shared activities, public space. Then the images are carried forward and imbued with the glow of memory.

The world of childhood echoes through the years with hopes and promises and instant delights and colored experiences. Pets and sports and food and drink provide a social glue that binds us. It is the common that speaks beyond language. And that is what this visual language strives for: a recognizable character or quality that reaches across isolation and unites.

My work holds the ease and comfort of the familiar. The paint spreads expansively across the paper, panel, or canvas. Ordinary scenes reflect leisure, adventures, and negotiated ways of being in the world.
