My postcards are from a series of paintings, drawings and sculptural books made from oyster shells. Using the oyster as a both a symbol and stand-in for humans, the work explores the apparent paradox of existence: we all possess individual consciousness yet are still interconnected. In the postcard drawings, I explore visual representations of the different ways we are connected. It is a simple premise and was executed as an active meditation on these ideas.
Sending and receiving mail has always been an important part of my life. I am one of the few people I know who still regularly sits down to write, most often on handmade postcards, envelopes and cards comprised of pieces of my fine art practice and recycled materials. I have a few giant boxes full of letters I’ve received throughout my life (and some from deceased loved ones that were returned to me after their passing). I refuse to give these up and periodically pull things from the box to re-enjoy. Each missive is a precious time capsule. Silly or serious, sloppy or elegant, handmade or purchased, each one is a distillation of place, time, and relationship – a small treasure that contains so much.
