Description

I have submitted three vintage postcards, which I bought in an antique shop in Adelaide, Australia. Each one has resonances for me. 1. This postcard shows the Torrens River, which flows through Adelaide, and Old Parliament House, which is now a heritage-listed building. One of the things that gives Parliament House cultural significance is that it was here, in 1894, that South Australia became the fourth legislature in the world to grant women the right to vote. 2. This postcard shows a balloon made of blue flowers carrying two people over a peaceful countryside. France's early eminence in ballooning led to a vibrant space programme. One of France's early rockets was named Véronique, I think after the rocket-shaped flower of the same name. 3. This postcard shows the Crystal Palace in London, created for the Great Exhibition of 1851. It was built of plate glass and steel and the light inside was apparently astonishing. Here it is depicted in moonlight. Somehow, as an Australian child born in the 1960s, I knew of its existence. I was devastated when I learnt it had burnt down in 1936 and I could never see it.
