Amy Tavern — Correspondances #1

My work begins with one small part, accumulating sequentially until a piece is complete. I fill paper with scores of lines and stitch objects into form with thousands of pearls or torn pieces of paper. I balance these arduous methods with chance, allowing room for the unexpected. Beyond building a piece, working this way allows me to develop a relationship with material and technique while slowing time.

Currently, I question the unseen realities of medical trauma, the vulnerability of waiting, and the mechanics of human perception. Through pairing repetition and deconstruction, I create drawings, collages, and sculptures that investigate how we assemble understanding from complex and fragmented information.

"Wish for the Interruption of Waves" is a series of drawings based in the visual language of MRI brain scans and the psychological concept of “thin slicing,” or the tendency to make quick judgments based on limited information. The work considers how those judgments can fail to register the reality of another person’s experience. Crooked lines, floating forms, and sharp diagonals come together to create abstract images that reveal only part of the story. I am interested in the challenge of reconstructing wholeness from fragments and in the possibility that patience and empathy can deepen how we see one another. The series invites viewers to look beyond first impressions and consider the unseen layers that shape perception.

The postcards I created for this exhibition, titled "Wish for," are 4 x 6 inch versions of the works in the series and include pen, pencil, gesso, and powdered graphite.
