My work predominantly examines the relationships between material environments and (internal) states of being.
In my current painting/drawing series “A House, Not My Home” I contemplate the concepts of home, belonging, utility, memory and transience of existence. The emotional weight of the spaces we physically and spiritually inhabit, as well as connections we share with the things we possess is echoed in my choice of medium and subject. Acrylics, oil, pastels, pencil and collage allow for immediacy of expression in a graphic, textural and unrestrained, almost childlike manner. I use motifs of vessels, utensils, furnishings and flora as anthropomorphic witnesses to an abstract portrait of a human life.
I further explore these themes in my photography practice, where I propose another perspective on existence and its dynamic, but ultimately transient nature. I embrace (and even purposefully invite) the technical limitations and the irregularities of the medium, as well as the tension between what is present and what is left out of the frame. In both analogue and digital, the process itself is a central figure in my work. Current series I'm working on is titled "Impressions of nothing" and can be seen on my website: milica.studio .
