Richard Mark Rawlins makes work that sits at the intersection of language, identity and colonial memory. Text is never decoration; it is the argument. Drawing on Caribbean vernacular, British political culture and the loaded iconography of flags, brands and slogans, his practice unpicks how power travels through familiar images and everyday words. His postcard scale works are intimate and direct, finding monumental political weight in small gestures. Born in Trinidad, based in Britain, he works from the position of the insider outsider, someone who arrived with one set of questions and keeps finding new ones. England keeps providing material.
