Viisti Dickens — Correspondances #1

Amidst the Anthropocene Epoch, we are witnessing the impact of human activities on the oceans, geology, landscape, ecosystems and climate. Floods, fires, droughts, typhoons prevail on a scale not seen before globally. At the same time, we face heightened geopolitical uncertainty. It’s complicated. Trust and truth seem relative, floating islands in a sea of disinformation, fear and negative tropes. Returning to the simplicity of visual landscapes, my work creates new shared experiences of witnessing – in the rampant verdure of forests and gardens; in the wild mountains and languid hills; along coastlines, in grassy fields; in oceans, rivers, waterfalls and lakes. Nature – comprising blue and green zones - is our shared language. These shifting shapes and spaces arise from the subconscious. Meditative, they take us to a place of serenity, or joy, beyond the sometimes challenging or troubling events covered in mass media, or our daily lives. In my work, I capture a visceral response to the world at large, infused with sadness and optimism. This 'postcard' work was created near my home by the ocean at Bondi Beach, Sydney Australia - on Ben Buckler's point where fishing boats, surfers, swimmers and sea life congregate. Drawn on a rainy winter's day, the work captures the feeling of timelessness at the boatramp, juxtaposed with the energy of tides, as a cluster of surfers walk across the beach, watched by a lone surfer still in the water. The marks and drawing are made during a break between rain, during a week of rainbows and big surf. It is part of my own 'Postcards and love letters' series.
