Since completing the painting ‘California Reader’ many years ago, the image has haunted me. Why does it move me? What is the heart of the matter? What is essential in the composition? What is superfluous? How can I distill this down to a direct visual/emotional connection? In the two previous versions I had included a couch, table and a view out of a window behind the figure. In this piece I wanted a direct visual impact. A poem rather than a description. It’s a quality I’ve always admired in Nicolas de Staël, Pierre Bonnard and Joan Mitchell.

A self- described "poetic realist", Ryan is especially inspired by what he observes around him. Primarily working with oils and pastels, he is fascinated by the relationship formed between colors. His bold pieces are painted on specially prepared aluminum panels or linen. His lifelong exploration of self through yoga and meditation, as well as the introduction to mindfulness through the Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hahn in the early ‘90’s, was instrumental in expanding his early love for Rembrandt, Hals, Manet and Degas to the artists Pierre Bonnard, Nicolas de Staël, Henri Matisse, Wolf Kahn and Joan Mitchell.
