Patricia Kelly

Patricia Kelly is an Irish artist based in County Fermanagh, where she was born and continues to live and work. A graduate of Ulster University in Belfast, she earned a B.A. with Honors in Fine Craft Design in 1986, specializing in embroidered textiles, followed by a Postgraduate Certificate in Art Education. She taught Art and Design until 2021, when the closure of a rural school led to a pivotal shift, allowing her to fully dedicate herself to her art.

Kelly’s practice centers on freehand embroidery, where stitched lines transcend function to become a contemplative language of abstraction. Influenced by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi and the wild, hedgerow-lined landscapes of Western Ireland, her work explores imperfection, transience, and the quiet beauty of repetition. Rooted in memory and material, her pieces are often made from layered, recycled fabrics—curtain linings, tablecloths, calico, scrim—evoking the handwork of generations before her. Quilting, sewing, and rural labor traditions form an emotional and conceptual backbone to her art.
