Between April and November my partner and I spend every weekend at our “caravan” in the middle of a nature preserve in the heart of Holland. It is my custom there to wake up just before dawn and quietly walk the short distance half asleep to the bridge that connects our island to the mainland. With my pastels, sketchbook, camera or nothing at all I sit in the middle of the bridge and await in perfect stillness for the sunrise. It is always a poem newly written. The scene that shifts, twinkles and unfolds before me has a magical, otherworldly quality and it fills me with wonder every time. The world constantly beginning. Although on this particular morning it was very overcast as Holland can sometimes be, however even in relative darkness it had a deep, dark hum that inspired me deeply.

A self- described "poetic realist", Ryan is especially inspired by what he observes around him. Primarily working with oils and pastels, he is fascinated by the relationship formed between colors. His bold pieces are painted on specially prepared aluminum panels or linen. His lifelong exploration of self through yoga and meditation, as well as the introduction to mindfulness through the Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hahn in the early ‘90’s, was instrumental in expanding his early love for Rembrandt, Hals, Manet and Degas to the artists Pierre Bonnard, Nicolas de Staël, Henri Matisse, Wolf Kahn and Joan Mitchell.
