In 2020 during a small window of opportunity during Covid, my partner and I drove from Amsterdam to Siena, Italy. There we enjoyed this beautiful city without the usual crowds as well as the surrounding countryside. The initiative for this road trip through Europe however was an amazing six day long concert series held in a small town about 30 minutes outside Siena called Asciano. The majority of the concerts were held in a 12th century church led by the famous Belgian conductor Philippe Herreweghe and his Collegium Vocale Crete Senesi. We drove back and forth between Siena and Asciano, arriving at day and leaving for our return to Siena in the evening. At a bend in the road I was struck by a large, old building in the company of a grove of cypress trees. The image captivated me, reinforced by our daily visits by day and again at night. I ended up doing a series of drawings that eventually led to two paintings: "Leaving Asciano" and "Leaving Asciano, night"

A self- described "poetic realist", Ryan is especially inspired by what he observes around him. Primarily working with oils and pastels, he is fascinated by the relationship formed between colors. His bold pieces are painted on specially prepared aluminum panels or linen. His lifelong exploration of self through yoga and meditation, as well as the introduction to mindfulness through the Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hahn in the early ‘90’s, was instrumental in expanding his early love for Rembrandt, Hals, Manet and Degas to the artists Pierre Bonnard, Nicolas de Staël, Henri Matisse, Wolf Kahn and Joan Mitchell.
