The idea for a "Paris taxi" series originated during a five day whirlwind visit to art exhibitions in the city of lights in January 2024.
During a 30 minute taxi ride in the early evening rain from the Rothko show at Fondation Louis Vuitton back to our hotel I was overwhelmed by a tsunami of visual imagery that resulted in a collection of nearly 300 photos in my overheated iPhone.
Returning to the hotel I quickly jotted down notes, impressions, sketches, anything that would help me hold onto the atmosphere I’d absorbed of Paris in the rain. The emotion, light, reflections, movement and energy. Later in my Amsterdam studio I began this second piece in the series

A self- described "poetic realist", Ryan is especially inspired by what he observes around him. Primarily working with oils and pastels, he is fascinated by the relationship formed between colors. His bold pieces are painted on specially prepared aluminum panels or linen. His lifelong exploration of self through yoga and meditation, as well as the introduction to mindfulness through the Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hahn in the early ‘90’s, was instrumental in expanding his early love for Rembrandt, Hals, Manet and Degas to the artists Pierre Bonnard, Nicolas de Staël, Henri Matisse, Wolf Kahn and Joan Mitchell.
